Romans 1:17
“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘The just shall live by faith.’”
Romans 1:17
We have already studied verse 16. Together, these verses form one unit.
- Romans 1:16: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith;”
This part refers to the gospel of Christ. In this gospel, the righteousness through which we can stand before the throne of God is revealed. This is the righteousness of Christ. “From faith to faith” can refer to growth in faith (for a similar sentence, read 2 Corinthians 3:18).
- Romans 3:21: “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets;”
- Philippians 3:9: “And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;”
- 2 Corinthians 3:18: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
“As it is written, ‘The just shall live by faith.’”
The just shall live by faith. Paul is referring to the words of the prophet Habakkuk. People are not saved by works, but by faith. We are saved through the work of Jesus Christ. He who believes in Him will be saved.
- Habakkuk 2:4: “Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him; but the just shall live by his faith.”
- John 3:36: “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
- Galatians 3:11: “But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for ‘the just shall live by faith.’”
- Hebrews 10:38: “Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”
Today’s lesson: In the gospel of Christ, which is mentioned in verse 16, the righteousness of God is revealed. If we believe in Christ and in what He did for us, we will be saved. We shall truly live.
