Numbers 11:29
Bible study about the Holy Spirit
"Then Moses said to him, “Are you zealous for my sake? Oh, that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!”"
Numbers 11:29
In the desert, God provided food for the people of Israel. He gave them manna every morning.
Verse 9: "And when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it."
But the people of Israel wanted more. They wanted meat. They reminded Moses of the fish, the cucumbers, and the melons of Egypt. What they forgot was that they were slaves. In Egypt, they were being killed.
Moses went to God with this problem. He cried out to the Lord and asked for help, even for death (verse 15). But God had a plan. He told Moses to gather 70 men, elders of Israel, and bring them to the tabernacle. God promised to give them His Spirit, so they could help Moses carry the burden.
But two men didn't show up at the tabernacle. They stayed in the camp. Their names are Eldad and Medad. God gave them His Spirit as well. A young man ran to Moses and told him what happened. Joshua, who would later lead the people of Israel, answered and said, verse 28: "Moses my lord, forbid them!"
After this, today's verse follows. It is both a response to Joshua and a prayer. Moses prayed to God to put His Spirit upon the people. Later on, another prophet also talked about this.
Joel 2:28: "And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days."
Today's lesson: On the day of Pentecost, God gave His Spirit. He poured Him out, the Holy Spirit came to us. Jesus endured everything and gave us the Comforter, the Helper, the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). And if we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, this Spirit will dwell in us, just as He dwelt in Jesus.
John 14:26: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."
