Hebrews 4:15
Jesus was both fully God and fully Man, yet He was without sin.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Hebrews 4:15
Jesus was both fully God and fully Man. That is why He is our High Priest.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses”
Jesus was fully human, just like us. In this way, He knows about our weaknesses. Jesus was also tired. He knew hunger, thirst, and pain.
- Hebrews 2:18: “For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted [tested], He is able to aid those who are tempted.”
“But was in all points tempted as we are”
He knew temptation. He became just like us, yet He remained fully God. Jesus was tempted by the devil. Why would He be tempted? Because the devil knew that He was also fully human. Jesus knew that He had to die for our sins. He knew that He had to go to Calvary. The devil also knew that Jesus had to die. That is why he tempted Jesus. Jesus became fully Man. He knows our weaknesses. Yet He did not sin.
- Philippians 2:7: “But made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
- Matthew 4:8-10: “Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, ‘All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”
“yet without sin.”
The Son of God was just like us, yet He was without sin. Paul says that He, who was Himself without sin, not only carried our sins, but became sin itself. The prophet Isaiah already wrote about Him being without sin. In the Old Testament, a lamb that was offered had to be perfect, without blemish (Leviticus 22:19-21). In the New Testament, the Lamb was also perfect. He was without blemish.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
- Isaiah 53:9: “And they [lit. He] made His grave with the wicked— but with the rich at His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.”
- 1 Peter 2:22: “Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth;”
- 1 John 3:5: “And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.”
Today’s lesson: We have a High Priest in heaven. His name is Jesus Christ. He was fully God and fully Man. He knows what we are going through. This comforts us when we are feeling down. We know that He is with us, and that He knows how we feel. So go to Him, for He knows what you are going through.
