Genesis 1:1
God created time, space, and matter... Why is this important?
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1
One of our first posts, now with Bible study! Let’s dive right into the verse.
“In the beginning”
Before time began, God was there. He created time. He is outside of time. Time was created by Him, and that is why He is also the One who knows the moment of our birth, even before we were born. He knows when we will die, even though we are still alive. This is because He is outside of time, He is the eternal God.
- John 1:1-2: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.”
- Colossians 1:17: “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
- Psalm 90:2: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
“God created”
God, Hebrew: אֱלֹהִ֑ים [’ĕ·lō·hîm], created all things. ‘Creating’ means making something that did not yet exist. God creates out of nothing, or out of something. He created the heavens and the earth out of nothing, but created man out of dirt.
- Genesis 2:7: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”
- Hebrews 11:3: “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”
Hebrews 11:3 shows us even more. God created everything through His Word. Throughout the Bible, this is repeated. What or Who is this Word? It is Jesus. God the Father created everything through the Son.
- Psalm 33:6: “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”
- John 1:3: “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
- John 1:10: “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.”
- Ephesians 3:9: “And to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;”
- Colossians 1:16: “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities [rulers] or powers [authorities]. All things were created through Him and for Him.”
- Hebrews 1:1-2: “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds [or ages];”
“The heavens and the earth”
God created the heavens, space. He created the earth, matter. The Hebrew word used for ‘heavens’, הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם [haš·šā·ma·yim], has different meanings. The first meaning is ‘heaven’ as in ‘the sky’; the second meaning is ‘heaven’ as in ‘the dwelling place of angelic beings’.
- Genesis 2:1: “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.”
- Psalm 89:11: “The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.”
- Psalm 136:5-6: “To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, for His mercy endures forever; To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, for His mercy endures forever;”
- Acts 17:24: “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.”
This verse can be used as an argument for the existence of God, because everything that exists must have a cause (cosmological argument). The universe exists, and must have a cause. God is this cause. He created time, space and matter simultaniously.
Because if there was no time, when will you create something? If there is no space, where will you create something? If there is no matter, what will you create?
Today’s lesson: God created the heavens and the earth. He made time, space, and matter. He is outside it all, but wants to have a personal relationship with His creation. This God has come down to us in the form of a Man named Jesus. God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son. Why? Because He wants us to be with Him. He wants you to be with Him.

I love it. Excellent post! God bless you.
